What is IELTS

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is a standardised testing module formulated to examine the English proficiency of a person who isn’t a native English speaker. The test is usually jointly conducted by IDP: IELTS, The British Council, and the Cambridge Assessment English. If a person wishes to study or immigrate to countries like the USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, he or she is required to present an IELTS scorecard. Based on the motive of your foreign immigration, IELTS is of two kinds, namely IELTS General Training and IELTS Academics. IELTS General Training is for professionals aiming to emigrate for their career and IELTS Academics is for students wishing to go abroad to pursue their dream career.

Minimum Score
IELTS is calculated on a 9-scale band.  A student can get a .5 score (like 6.5 or 7.5) as well. IELTS scorecard comprises sectional scores (listening, reading, writing, speaking) as well as an overall band. There isn’t any minimum score required to pass the exam and this score differs from university to university as well as country to country.

IELTS Paper pattern
IELTS exam encapsulates 4 sections- reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The first three sections (reading, writing, and listening) are conducted on the same day whereas the speaking slot can be booked by the test taker as per the availability of the slot. The total duration of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The IELTS score can range from 0-9 and the 6-8 band is the median range.

Time Allocated to this section: 30 Minutes [Additional 10 minutes to transfer the answers]        
No. of questions: 40 (4 sections with 10 questions each)

Section: Reading          
Time allocated for this section: 60 Minutes       
No. of questions: 40 (3 passages with a plethora of questions).

Section: Writing
Time allocated for this section: 60 Minutes
No. of questions: 2 (Two writing tasks and both need be completed in the stipulated period).

Section: Speaking         
Time allocated: 11-14 Minutes 
No. of questions: 3 Parts (Oral Interview which is taped).

IELTS General Test vs IELTS Academic
Both the variants of IELTS have 4 sections namely reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The reading and writing section differs in both the paper whereas listening and speaking remain similar. The reading section in IELTS Academic is a little advanced as compared to the General Training passages. In the IELTS Academic, the examiner expects a much-refined composition as compared to a General Test examinee.

IELTS Academic is for candidates who are interested in applying for higher education or professional registration to countries that use English as their fundamental language of communication. The main purpose of the examination is to judge whether a candidate is ready to begin studying or training in the English language. Countries that widely recognize IELTS for studying are US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
